Countrywide Conflict Displacement

This year, more than 146,400 people were driven from their homes due to conflict across the country. This is one quarter less in comparison to the same period in the previous year, in which 196,112 people were displaced in Afghanistan.

Central: Armed clashes in Baghlan, Kapisa, Kunduz and Nangarhar have displaced more than 3,000 people to Kabul. Approximately 1,000 people reportedly arrived in Parwan from Kapisa and Kunduz. Based on assessments, a total of 10,850 people have been displaced in the Central Region since January, more than 7 per cent of the total displacement country-wide.

Northern/North Eastern: Fighting around Kunduz has reportedly displaced nearly 14,000 people to Kunduz centre, notably from villages surrounding the city and Aliabad district. Clashes in Balkh province have provoked displacements of nearly 2,400 people within the province, notably to Mazar-e-Sharif. Since January, nearly 64,000 displaced people have been assessed in the north and north-eastern regions. They account for 43 per cent of the total displacements country-wide this year.

Eastern: Some 1,400 people reportedly were displaced within Nangarhar and arrived notably in Jalalabad. More than 800 people were reportedly displaced within Kunar, according to authorities. Since January, 19,900 displaced people have been assessed in the Eastern Region. They account for 13 per cent of the total displacements country-wide this year.

Southern: No new displacements have been reported in the Southern Region during the last week. Since January, nearly 37,500 displaced people have been assessed in southern and southeastern provinces, one quarter of the total displacements in Afghanistan since January.

Western: In Hirat city, some 490 displaced people were verified from Hirat, Farah, Badghis and Kunduz provinces who had arrived between May and June. This year, nearly 14,100 people have been displaced in the Western Region, based on assessments. They account for 10 per cent of the total of displaced people in Afghanistan since January.

Natural disasters and disease outbreaks

More than 30 patients have been admitted to Hirat hospital with suspected Viral hemorrhagic fever, since mid-May. Six of the patients died, according to health authorities. Cases of this fever are reported regularly from Hirat, with numbers peaking between May and August. There are no gaps reported in providing the necessary medical care to the patients.

A flash flood in Shaki district, Badakhshan, killed three people and injured 15, according to initial reports. The houses of 20 families were reportedly damaged or destroyed.

Refugees and Returnees

A total of 2,075 undocumented Afghans arrived in Afghanistan from Pakistan from 2 to 8 July, and 9,614 from Iran. The arrivals from Pakistan have increased nearly eightfold compared to the previous week and mark the anticipated increase following the end of Ramadan, according to IOM.

From 2 to 8 July, 350 registered refugees returned from Pakistan and 21 from Iran. Since January, more than 35,100 refugees have returned to Afghanistan, according to UNHCR.
