KARACHI: Despite the deadly attack on the seven policemen guarding polio workers last week, volunteers succeeded to vaccinate 95 per cent of the targeted children against the virus during the drive, officials said on Tuesday.

“During the campaign concluded last week, around 7,000 volunteers and teams succeeded to vaccinate 95pc of the target in Karachi,” officials of the emergency operations centre (EOC) for polio in Sindh told a meeting presided over by Karachi commissioner Asif Hyder Shah.

“That performance by our brave teams was satisfactory, but now we have to immunise 100pc children in the next campaign,” said the commissioner.

The meeting reviewed arrangements for another eight-day campaign scheduled to start next week in five of the six districts of Karachi. Deputy commissioners, town health officers and officials from the army, police and the Rangers attended the meeting. Besides, representatives from the World Health Organisation, Unicef and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation were present.
