Over three decades of conflict in Afghanistan have led to insecurity and large scale displacement both within the country and to neighbouring Iran and Pakistan.
The European Commission continues to provide humanitarian assistance to the displaced and those affected by conflict and natural disaster, providing emergency health services, shelter, water and sanitation and livelihood support to the most vulnerable.
Vulnerable Afghan refugees in Iran and Pakistan benefit from EU-funded care and maintenance support.
Conflict in neighbouring Pakistan has also pushed thousands of families and individuals to seek refuge on the Afghan side of the border. Food, water, shelter, access to health and protection to newly displaced Pakistani refugees is provided.
The European Commission advocates for safe access to people in need so that humanitarian workers can deliver assistance despite insecurity. The Commission also facilitates access to the most vulnerable by providing air transport services.
To strengthen the resilience of Afghans to recurrent natural hazards, the Commission has provided over €885 000 for 2015-2016 to reduce the risks arising from natural disasters.
