According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), monsoon rains have now claimed over 140 lives across Pakistan, the majority of deaths due to electrocution. The strong monsoon currents that caused fatal flooding have now almost ended, with light to moderate monsoon currents still persisting over northern parts of the country.
The Ministry of National Health Services has expressed concern about outbreaks of water-borne diseases such as gastroenteritis, cholera, hepatitis and typhoid in Karachi in the wake of the heavy rains. The situation is expected to deteriorate over the current Eid holiday.
The Pakistan Navy has been called in to drain the water from Saadi Town, Karachi, in order to avoid a repeat of the massive loss of life witnessed there in 2013. The situation is now under control.
