Highlights:

  • Total displacement in Afghanistan this year has reached more than 223,000 people.
    Intensified military operations in Chardarah district, Kunduz, displaced around 5,200 people, according to first reports.

  • Following flash floods, 221 families have been identified to receive assistance in Laghman, Kunar and Nangarhar. 130 families have already received assistance in a joint response.

  • During the past week, more than 41,000 displaced people, undocumented returnees and refugees received some form of humanitarian assistance across the country.

  • In Paktika, humanitarian partners were reportedly not allowed to assess the situation of some 350 displaced people, out of fear of local elders and representatives of the displaced community from members of an NSAG.

Countrywide Conflict Displacement

From 1 January to 31 August 2017, 223,874 people have fled their homes due to conflict in Afghanistan. This is 11,000 people more than in the previous week. The provinces sheltering the highest number of displaced people are Kunduz with 28,261 IDPs, Nangarhar with 27,401 IDPs and Uruzgan with 17,062.

Central: Heavy clashes erupted in the past week over the control of Baraki Barak DAC, Logar, without causing new displacements, according to DoRR. Clashes also continued over the control of Janikhel DAC, Pakyta. The area has reportedly already been abandoned by most residents some weeks ago. In 2017, a total of 11,990 people have been verified as displaced in the Central Region, just over 5 per cent of the total displacement.

Northern/North Eastern: Following attacks on 26 August by NSAGs on villages in Garziwan district, Faryab, some 700 people reportedly displaced to Garziwan DAC. Around 5,200 people were displaced from more than half a dozen villages in Chardarah district, Kunduz, due to military operations that intensified on 2 September, according to first reports. Those displaced either moved to Kunduz City, Aliabad district or remain in Chardara district. Some 450 people reportedly displaced from Dasht-eArchi and Emamsaheb districts to Taloqan City, Takhar province.

In total, more than 2,100 displaced people arrived in Taloqan City during the reporting period from Badakshan, Kunduz and Takhar provinces and verifications have begun. Since January, 90,190 people have been verified as displaced in the Northern and Northeastern regions, 40 per cent of this year’s total.

Eastern: No significant new displacements have been reported from the Eastern Region during the reporting period. Since January, 36,708 displaced people have been assessed in the Eastern Region 16 per cent of the total displacement in 2017.

Southern/South Eastern: Military operations and clashes continued in Uruzgan and Zabul provinces without causing any major displacements. Ongoing assessments in Lashkargah, Hilmand, were put on hold for the Eid celebrations. Some 51,731 people are currently displaced in the Southern and Southeastern regions, 23 per cent of the total displacements this year.

Western: No major displacements have been reported during the reporting period. In total, 33,255 people are currently displaced in the Western Region. They account for 15 per cent of the total displaced people across the country.
