Countrywide Conflict Displacement

From January to end of July, more than 173,000 people were driven from their homes in Afghanistan due to conflict, up by 5,400 people from last week. Overall, displacements are around 15 per cent less compared to the same period in 2016. Currently, families have been displaced from 255 out of 399 districts and sought safety and shelter in 172 districts. More than 70 humanitarian organizations are providing assistance to displaced families across the country.

Central: Needs assessments are ongoing in Kabul, to confirm the number of families who fled armed clashes in Baghlan, Kunduz and Nangarhar in the past weeks. More than 11,200 people have been displaced to the Central Region since January, just under 7 per cent of the total displacement country-wide.

Northern/North Eastern: Conflict in Kunduz continues to force people from the surrounding areas into Kunduz City where more than 25,000 people have arrived, according to authorities. Nearly 8,000 people reportedly were displaced from six districts in Faryab Province and nearly 1,500 people in Baghlan-e-Jadid district, Baghlan. These numbers have not yet been verified. In the past seven months, more than 70,000 people have been displaced in the two regions, 40 per cent this year’s total displacements.

Eastern: More than 2,000 people have been displaced within Kunar, Laghman, Nangarhar and Nuristan during reporting period according to initial reports due to conflict, insecurity and intimidation by NSAGs. The majority of about 1,000 people who displaced due to the attack on Waygal DAC on 26 July reportedly returned to their homes but the situation reportedly remains tense. Since January, 34,000 displaced people have been assessed in the Eastern Region. They account for 19 per cent of the total displacement country-wide this year.

Western: Nearly 900 displaced people from Badghis, Farah and Hirat were assessed in Hirat City and nearly 1,500 displaced people were assessed in Chaghcharan, Ghor. In total, 18,000 people are displaced in the Western Region. They account for 10 per cent of the total of displaced people across the country since beginning of the year.

Southern: Some 6,300 people were reportedly newly displaced in Kandahar/Dand district and more than 11,000 in Lashkargah, Hilmand. Since January, 39,000 displaced people have been assessed in southern and southeastern provinces, 22 per cent of the total displacements in Afghanistan.
