Pakistan: NDMA Monsoon 2017 Daily Situation Report No. 012 (Period covered: 1300 HRS 1300 HRS 12 July 2017 – 1300 HRS 13 July 2017)

1. Rivers Flow Situation Reported by Flood Forecasting Division. All rivers are flowing at Normal levels except River Kabul at Nowshera which is at Medium, River Chenab at Khanki & Qadirabad at Medium to Low and River Jhelum at Mangla at Low to Medium level. Details at Annex A.

2. Past Meteorological Situation and Future Forecast by PMD. Significant rainfall reported in last 24 hours is; Islamabad 103 mm, Palandri 102 mm, Rawalpindi 97 mm, Mandibahauddin 83 mm, Domel 81 mm, Muzaffarabad 65 mm, Gujranwala 61 mm, Alexandra Bridge 58 mm, Kallar 56 mm and Sialkot 47 mm. Forecast for next 24 hours predicts scattered windthundershowers / rain with heavy falls at isolated places over Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, FATA, Eastern Balochistan, Kashmir & Gilgit Baltistan. Details at Annex B.

4. Significant Events Last 24 Hours

a. Due to heavy rains in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, maximum water level in Lai Nullah had reached upto 19.36 ft at Katarian and 16.86 ft at Gawalmandi. Alert was issued to vulnerable areas along with Lai Nullah. Now the water has receded to normal flow.

b. Heavy rains caused flooding in Village Dagai, Yar Hussain, Dobian, Sard Cheena and Yaqoobi, Tehsil Razar, District Swabi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on 12 July 2017. No damages reported.

c. Heavy downpour occurred in District Buner, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on 12 July 2017.
Resulting, 2 x injured and 1 x house partially damaged. Furthermore, 2 x Children drowned in flash flood water in Tehsil Daggar, District Buner. 1 x dead body recovered.

d. Due to heavy rains in Tehsil Tangi, District Charsadda, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on 12 July 2017, 6 x houses partially damaged.

e. Due to Medium level flooding in Kalpani Nullah, Village Gadar Humza Khan, District Mardan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on 13 July 2017, 4 x houses partially damaged.

f. Heavy rains were reported in Punjab from 12 July – 13 July 2017. Damages are being compiled by PDMA Punjab.

5. Road Situation (NHA and Respective Provinces).

a. Due to heavy rains in District Gujrat small portion of bridge on Gujrat to Kurrianwala road was affected. Due to which traffic was suspended temporarily. Alternate route was provided for all kind of traffic.

b. KKH was blocked due to landslide at Tattapani, District Chillas, Gilgit Baltistan on 13 July at 0630 hours. FWO cleared the landslide. Road is now open for all type of traffic.

c. Gigit – Skardu road (S-1) is blocked at Sapper Shaheed Bridge due to landslide and between Kachura and Ayub Bridge due to flood on 12 July 2017. FWO is working on sites to clear the road.

d. All other roads across the Country are clear for all types of traffic.

  1. Railway Situation. All railway routes are clear for traffic.

7. Preliminary Losses / Damages Reported.

a. 2 x death, 2 x injured and 11 x house partially damaged was reported in last 24 hours.

b. Overall details of losses / damages during Monsoon Season 2017 are at Annex C.

  2. Any Critical Activity to Report. Nothing to Report.

10. NDMA Recommendation. Heavy rainfall is expected from 13 th to 15 th July 2017. All concerned departments are advised to remain on High Alert during the period and ensure following necessary actions:-b. Ensure clearance of sewerage / drainage system in all major cities including Karachi,
Rawalpindi, Lahore, Multan, Quetta & Peshawar by relevant stakeholders. Critical monitoring of Lai Nullah be ensured by relevant stakeholders.

b. Issue repeated alerts to people residing in / close to river plains / water courses.

c. Raising awareness to public with regards to vacating dangerous buildings, remaining away from electric wires and avoid swimming during rain especially in underpasses.

d. Advising vulnerable population not to venture into nullahs / flash flooding routes.

e. NHA, FWO and C&W Depts of respective Provinces / Regions to remain vigilant in restoring road linkages.

f. NIH / NHEPRN to advise all provincial Health departments about pre-placement of necessary staff and medicines, where required.

g. Vulnerable communities along reaches of Rivers Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi, Sutlej and their tributaries / Nullahs to be sensitized for requisite measures.
