Countrywide Conflict Displacement

This year, more than 141,700 people have fled their homes across the country due to conflict. This is a 22 per cent decline compared to the same period in the previous year, in which 182,600 people were displaced.

Based on assessments, 7,730 people have been displaced in the Central Region since January, less than 6 per cent of the total displacement country-wide.

Northern/North Eastern: Approximately 3,500 civilians have been displaced in Darzab district, Jawzjan. On 19 June, heavy fighting erupted around Darzab DAC, forcing people into displacement and trapping others in their houses. By 27 June,
ANSF had reportedly regained control of the area. Since January, over 60,100 displaced people have been assessed in the north and north-eastern regions. They account for 45 per cent of the total displacements country-wide this year.

Eastern: Some 1,400 people or 200 families have reportedly fled their homes in Behsut, Dehbala and Rodat districts, Nangarhar, and sought refuge in Dehbala town, Nangarhar. They reportedly left their homes prior to expected military operations aimed at NSAGs. Since January, some 19,900 displaced people have been assessed in the Estern Region. They account for 14 per cent of the total displacements country-wide this year.

Southern: No new displacements have been reported in the Southern Region. Since January, nearly 37,500 displaced people have been assessed in southern and southeastern provinces, 26 per cent of the total displacements in Afghanistan since January.
Western: No recent displacements have been reported from the provinces in the Western Region. This year, just under 13,600 people have been displaced in the four provinces of the Western Region, according to assessments. They account for 10 per cent of the total of people displaced in Afghanistan since January.

Natural disasters

Heavy rain reportedly destroyed around 100 shops and houses in Sabari district, Khost, and caused flash floods in Gardez and Ahmadaba districts, Paktya. There are no reports of casualties.
Since January, nearly 40,000 people have been affected by natural disasters, 3,600 houses were damaged and nearly 1,500 houses destroyed.

Refugees and Returnees

From 25 June to 1 July, the DoRR border monitoring team registered the arrival of 273 undocumented Afghan returnees from neighbouring Pakistan. More than 1,800 undocumented Afghan returnees arrived from Iran. In total, IOM provided assistance to 250 people during the reporting period. Since January, more than 180,000 undocumented returnees have arrived in Afghanistan. Also from 25 June to 1 July, UNHCR assisted the return of 33 refugees from Pakistan and 7 from Iran.
In total, more than 33,300 refugees have returned from Pakistan in 2017.

Ongoing Response Activities

Central: In Paktika, ANDMA provided AFN15,000 (US$220) cash assistance per family to over 880 people whose houses had been destroyed or damaged by flash floods end of May 2017.

Western: In Farah City, DRC-DDG as provided 315 displaced people from two districts in Farah Province with cash assistance to cover the cost of emergency household items, food, rent, health services and fuel for cooking for two months.

Access Constraints and Security Incidents

Northern: Darzab and Qushtepa districts, Jawzjan, remain inaccessible for aid workers, according to humanitarian partners, due to presence of NSAGs in the area. The district hospital reportedly sustained damage during the fighting and notably faces a lack of medical personnel to resume full service. The health facility in Qushtepa, 12 kilometres from Darzab, is reportedly functioning and accessible for civilians from Darzab.

Eastern: Members of a NSAG burned down a mobile clinic in Chapa Dara district, Kunar. The clinic was intended to provide community mobilization in order to vaccinate approximately 270 children in the area against polio.
