Countrywide Conflict Displacement

This year, nearly 138,300 people have fled their homes due to conflict. This is 27 per cent less compared to the same period in the previous year, in which 188,419 people were displaced.
Forced displacement is reported from 29 out of 34 provinces and 58 per cent of all displaced people are girls and boys under 18.
Central: More than 2,100 people have reportedly been displaced to Ghazni centre and Malestan district from three districts in Ghazni and from neighbouring Khasuruzgan, Uruzgan. These numbers could not yet be verified. Based on assessments, 7,730 people have been displaced in the Central Region since January, less than 6 per cent of the total displacement country-wide.
Northern/North Eastern: Displacements of nearly 7,000 people are reported to three districts in Faryab from within the province.
Most of these families are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, according to the screening committee. Assessments by humanitarian partners have started. Heavy fighting erupted in Darzab, Jawzjan, and around 3,000 people have fled to relatives in surrounding villages, according to initial reports. Since January, over 60,100 displaced people have been assessed in the north and north-eastern regions. They account for 44 per cent of the total displacements country-wide this year.

Eastern: Over 210 people have been displaced within Jalalabad City, Nangarhar, and Mehtarlam, Laghman, according to DoRR.
Partners have commenced assessments. In 2017, nearly 19,700 people have been displaced and assessed in the region, 14 per cent of all displaced people in the country this year.
Southern: No new displacements have been reported in the region. According to authorities, more than 2,300 displaced households in newly retaken areas of Hilmand are in urgent need of assistance. Partners are currently seeking ways to conduct independent assessments and verify these displacements. Since January, nearly 37,000 people have been displaced and assessed in the southern and southeastern provinces, 26 per cent of the total displaced people in Afghanistan this year.
Western: Some 715 newly displaced people have been verified in Hirat and Badghis provinces. More than 400 have found refuge in Hirat city, coming from five different provinces. More than 300 people came from two districts in Badghis to Qala-e-Naw City in May. This year, more than 12,800 people have been displaced in the western region, according to assessments. They account for just more than 9 per cent of the total of people displaced in Afghanistan since January.

Refugees and Returnees

The number of documented and undocumented returnees from Pakistan has steadily declined during Ramadan with only 444 people crossing into Afghanistan in the first half of the reporting period, according to IOM. Also UNHCR reported a distinct decrease of refugees arriving in country. According to the latest available figures, only 1,300 people crossed into Afghanistan in the first three weeks of Ramadan, less than half compared to the week before Ramadan. It is expected that returns will pick up following the end of Ramadan on 25 June.
