Countrywide Conflict Displacement
The total number of individuals displaced by conflict in 2016 has risen to 646,698, as joint teams continue to finalise assessments of those displaced last year. In 2017 so far, 9,759 individuals have been verified as displaced. Around 68 per cent are located in hard to access areas.
Northern/North Eastern: Military operations surrounding Kunduz city continued for a seventh week, with sporadic security incidents reported elsewhere in the region. In Jawzjan, 1,064 IDPs were verified as displaced from conflict in 2016, as were an additional 2,450 individuals in Sar-i-Pul. In 2017 so far, over 1,114 verified IDPs have been displaced from the Northern/North Eastern region; approximately 11 per cent of the country total.
Central: Fighting in Tagab, Kapisa, has so far displaced 1,253 IDPs within Kapisa, with a further 133 individuals displaced from the fighting verified in Kabul. A reported 2,170 unverified conflict IDPs have been reported in Parwan from Laghman, with assessments to commence shortly.
Southern: The overall security situation remained relatively calm, with the exception of increased fighting in Sangin, Hilmand, and sporadic attacks in Zabul. The persistent insecurity in Uruzgan is contributing to a worsening humanitarian situation, with freedom of movement, livelihoods and humanitarian access all affected. In 2017 so far, 6,650 verified individuals have been displaced from the south; around 68 per cent of the country total.
Eastern: Military operations including airstrikes continued in Nangarhar, Laghman, Kunar and Nuristan. In Dehbala, Nangahar, there were reports of intra-NSAG clashes, which may result in new displacements.
Western: The security situation in the Western provinces remains unstable, with reports of small security incidents. Unverified displacements were reported in Farah city (336 individuals), Qala-e-Naw, Badghis (364) and Chaghcharan, Ghor (152), with assessments planned. Flooding in Hirat, and snowfall/avalanches in Badghis and Ghor affected small caseloads.
