Pakistan: Flood survivors complain about non-payment of compensation

UPPER DIR: The relatives of the people injured in the Biyar flash floods have complained about non-payment of compensation announced by the provincial government.

Talking to reporters here on Saturday, Akhoonzada Bahadar Khan, the contender for the naib nazim slot in Kalkot tehsil, said on June 25 flash floods claimed seven lives and injured two people. At least 14 houses, 25 shops, bridges and roads were also swept away by the devastating floods, he added.

Bahadar Khan said assistant commissioner Sheringal Abdul Wali Khan had distributed Rs0.3 million each among the heirs of those killed in the calamity, but two injured were yet to get compensation announced for them. He said the traders who lost their shops were unable to restart their businesses due to financial constraints.

Bahadar Khan said the affected people still faced flood risk as the bridge over River Panjkora had been washed away by floods.

THREE KILLED: Two people were killed and two others injured in different incidents in Upper Dir, police said on Saturday.

In Parao village of Dir town, unidentified people entered the house of Irshad, an Elite Force constable, and opened fire on his family members, killing his wife on the spot and injuring him.

He was shifted to the district headquarters hospital where his condition was stated to be out of danger. The police registered an FIR and arrested three suspects in the case.

In another incident, two groups clashed over water dispute in Nashamal village of Usheri Dara area. Gandigar police said in the exchange of fire one Mirajudin was killed on the spot, while a woman was injured. The police registered an FIR and began investigations.

A schoolteacher was killed when he fell from rooftop of a masque while fixing a loudspeaker in Barikot.
