Islamic Relief is to provide vital aid to those hit by devastating flash flooding in countries in South East Asia.
Weeks of torrential monsoon rains in the aftermath of cyclone Komen have triggered deadly floods and landslides in many countries. Hundreds of people have lost their lives and millions more have been displaced.
Islamic Relief’s immediate emergency response will focus on India and Myanmar, two of the worst affected countries.
We are working closely with local partners in West Bengal, India – in which hundreds of thousands of people have fled to relief camps, and to provide food rations and water-purification kits.
Almost every state in Myanmar has been affected. We are liaising with our implementation partner in Rakhine State, where it is thought that the most urgent needs are food, water, blankets, shelter, medical aid and a range of essential items. Islamic Relief is gearing up to respond with foodpacks, mobile clinics and shelter kits for thousands of affected families.
Islamic Relief is also closely monitoring the situation in Pakistan. We have dispatched emergency teams to Chitral, South Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and are coordinating with national authorities and other humanitarian actors to ensure aid reaches vulnerable people.
As the rains continue to lash the region and the reported death toll rises rapidly, Islamic Relief is mobilising to distribute aid in the coming days.
