Highlights

  • WFP continues its relief food assistance to displaced and returnee populations in the country’s north-west, complemented by livelihoods, nutrition and education support in the region alongside other targeted districts across Pakistan.

  • In June, WFP initiated preparation for operationalizing its cash-based livelihood support intervention in Sindh and Balochistan. Livelihood activities are progressing well in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).

  • The first meeting of the Strategic Review Advisory Group of the Food Security and Nutrition Strategic Review was held in July. In addition, the draft report of the Climate Risks and Food Security Analysis (CRFSA) has been submitted to the Ministry of Climate change for clearance and endorsement.

Operational Updates

  • The first meeting of the Strategic Review Advisory Group of the Food Security and Nutrition Strategic Review was held on 27 July 2016. During the meeting, the research team presented the Terms of References (TORs) and work plan of the strategic review exercise, to all relevant public and private sector stakeholders, for endorsement. The participants shared their recommendations on the process, which will include consultations in all provinces and administrative areas which are due to start in August 2016.

  • The draft report of the Climate Risks and Food Security Analysis (CRFSA) has been submitted to the Ministry of Climate Change for clearance and endorsement, subsequent to completion of all requisite stakeholder consultations. The study is tentatively due to be launched formally on 14th September 2016.

  • The draft report of the Food Security Analysis 2015-16 is being reviewed by the Ministry of Food Security and Research for endorsement. This report is tentatively due to be launched by the end of August 2016.

  • The controller News and Current Affairs of Radio Pakistan, Mr. Javed Khan Jadoon, conducted an hour long live interview of WFP Pakistan Country Director and Representative, Ms. Lola Castro in his programme called ‘Perspective’. The scope, aims and objectives of WFP’s operations in Pakistan were discussed with particular focus on the relief operation in KP and FATA and nutrition support interventions.   • Three rounds of the DFID funded cash-based recovery interventions have been completed in Bara Tehsil of Khyber Agency in FATA in collaboration with the Consortium members - UNDP, FAO and UNICEF.

  • Activities are progressing under the WFP-SDC Supported Community Based DisasDRR initiative in the Bajaur and Mohmand Agencies of FATA, subsequent to its formal launch in June 2016. This joint intervention is being implemented in 100 most disaster-prone villages in both the Agencies (Bajaur/Mohmand) in close coordination with local government bodies.
