Pakistan: NDMA sends relief for GB landslide affectees

NDMA in coordination with Government of Gilgit Baltistan and with the assistance of Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has sent relief goods to GB via C-130 carrying 8 tons of Wheat Flour and 480 kg of Milk Powder (for children) to meet food shortage.

In addition, second C-130 sortie carrying 7.5 tons of ration (including lentils, sugar and Rice) is also scheduled to depart GB on 13 April, 2016. Furthermore, more sorties carrying ration will also be planned for GB till the situation normalizes.

The landslide occurred at multiple places at Karakorum Highway (KKH) disconnected road network connecting GB. NDMA is continuously monitoring the situation and is in constant coordination with NHA and FWO to ensure early opening of the blocked roads.

Following is the detail of blocked areas at KKH.

Situation Report of National Highways – 12 April 2016

Due to recent heavy raining in parts of Northern Areas and Gilgit Baltistan, National Highway Network which includes N-15, N-35 (KKH), & S-1 has been damaged due to land slide and mud flow. Taking cognisance of the facts National Highway Authority has taken all necessary measures to ensure that repair works are immediately taken up. M/s FWO has been mobilized on N-35 (KKH) and S-1 (Gilgit-Skardu), whereas on N-15 different contractors are mobilized to clear avalanches and snow.

The Route wise Situation report is as under;

N-35: (Hassanabdal-Haripur-Abbottabad-Manshera-Thakot-Dasu-Gilgit-Khunjerab):

  1. Road from Hassanabdal up to Kiyal [km 0 to Km 266 (8 km after Pattan)] is open for all kind of traffic.

  2. At km 266+600, KKH in 90 meter width and in 40 meter depth has settled due to land slide. Now FWO has mobilized machinery from both ends and efforts are to make road cut on the hill side through controlled blasting, so that road formation is constructed.

  3. Road after this 90 meter slide portion i.e. km 266+700 to km 298 has been cleared.

  4. At km 298 heavy slide has damaged KKH in 300 meter length and 90 meter depth. NHA has mobilized M/s FWO to clear the slide and make roadway by blasting the hill side.

  5. From km 298+300 i.e. after land slide portion road is clear up to km 306 (Barsin) one way.

  6. Road from km 306 (Barsin) to 326 (Looter) is open one-way.

  7. From km 326 to km 352 (Sazin) and up to Gilgit (km 540) road is open for traffic, however at certain places one way traffic is plying.

  8. From Gilgit (Km 540) up to Khunjerab (806) road is open for traffic.

S-1 (Jaglot-Sassi-Dambu Das-Shangrila-Skardu): Road has been blocked in the morning at km 75 due to landslide. FWO has been mobilized and by today evening, the road will be opened.

N-15 (Mansehra-Naran-Jalkhad-Chilas): Road from km 0 (Mansehra) to km 108 (Kaghan) is open for traffic, however, at few points its open one way. From km Kaghan (km 108) to Naran (km 127) snow and avalanche clearance is in progress.
